Triad Electric & Controls Inc. of Baton Rouge was contracted by Occidental Chemical Corp. in October 2002 as general contractor to perform the installation upgrade of a $6.2 million instrumentation system for the OxyChem plant in Taft. The project ultimately upgraded a 30-year-old pneumatic system to a new Honeywell electronic distributive control system.

The project marks the largest collaboration for Triad at any OxyChem facility. Never before had OxyChem performed a complete, plant-wide DCS modernization. Uncommon to this type project was the fact that the owner selected Triad as the general contractor, an increasingly rare circumstance for an electrical and instrumentation contractor.

However, it was believed that Triad's expertise would streamline the project and ensure project success.

During the OxyChem project, Triad's workforce peaked at 85 employees (plus 32 subcontractor employees) in early March. Along with its subcontractors, Triad successfully performed 100,972 manhours with no OSHA recordables and a total recordable injury rate of zero.

Triad employed 100 percent of its talent from the surrounding area. Additionally, 99 percent of all materials were purchased through local vendors. OxyChem's goal of upgrading its facility will have a positive environmental and economic impact on the surrounding communities and maintain its world position in the chemical industry while streamlining the Taft processes.

Most Triad employees have more than 10 years of craft experience with the company, which led to the success of the project.

In an effort to reward and assist its employees for their contributions to the project, Triad provided per diem to workers traveling to Taft for the duration of the project. OxyChem also rewarded Triad provided per diem to workers traveling to Taft for the duration of the project. OxyChem also rewarded Triad with a monthly safety incentive.

After nine months of intensive labor and dedication, the OxyChem project was concluded on schedule, within budget and with no recordables.
