Louisiana Contractor's Best of 2003 confers top honors to Children's Hospital expansion, LSU Academic Center

Louisiana Contractor's "Best of 2003" project awards program voting was held in mid September and 21 winners were declared, with two awarded the highest honor.

"Best of 2003 Judges Award - Construction" honors were given to Brice Building Co. of New Orleans for the construction of the Children's Hospital ER/OR in New Orleans; and the "Best of 2003 Judges Award - Design" honors were given to Trahan Architects of Baton Rouge for the design of the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student Athletes at LSU in Baton Rouge.

This year's winners were derived from six construction categories and two design categories. Nominations were accepted from the construction industry, at large.
Official recognition of the winners will be made during an awards luncheon on Thurs., Dec. 11, 2003, at the New Orleans Airport Hilton.

Voting for the "Best of 2003" Project Awards was conducted at the Radisson in Baton Rouge on Sept. 24 by the following panel of judges: Mike Ricca, Department of Transportation and Development of Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge; Bill Temple, DOTD, Baton Rouge; Chris Town, Arkel Constructors Inc. Baton Rouge; Ann Ellis, Milton J. Womack Inc. of Baton Rouge; Don Matherne, Percy J. Matherne Contractor Inc. of Baton Rouge; Jeff Zagone, Dow Chemical of Plaquemine; Ray Polito, BASF of Geismar; Tom Sofranko, LSU School of Architecture of Baton Rouge; Gordon Brooks, College of Art & Design, University of Louisiana at Lafayette; and David Cronrath, LSU School of Architecture of Baton Rouge.

The judges based their decisions on the following criteria:

  • quality of construction or design
  • innovation
  • a project's contribution to the industry
  • a project's ability to overcome unique construction or design challenges
  • overall excellence
    Winning projects were determined as follows:
  • Best of 2003 Judges Award in Construction or Design - One project determined by the judges, following a discussion, to be the best of all entries
  • Best project in a category: The project with the highest score in categories with three or more nominations
  • Award of Excellence - All projects averaging 4.0 and above (out of 5)
  • Award of Merit - All projects averaging 3.5 to 4.0 (out of 5)
