Louisiana Contractor's Best of 2001

Hotel Monaco restoration, NOCCA garner top honors

By Sam Barnes

Louisiana Contractor's "Best of 2001" project awards program voting was held in mid September and 20 winners were declared, with two awarded the highest honor.

"Best Construction Project of 2001" honors were granted to Brice Building Co. Inc., Metairie, for the renovation of Hotel Monaco in New Orleans; while "Best Design Project of 2001" honors were given to Mathes Brierre Architects, New Orleans, for its design of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in New Orleans.

This year's winners were derived from eight construction categories and two design categories. Nominations were accepted from the construction industry, at large, for three months prior to the voting date.

Official recognition of the winners will be made during an awards luncheon on Thurs., Jan. 31, 2002, at Boudreaux's in Baton Rouge.

Voting for the "Best of 2001" Project Awards was conducted at Embassy Suites, Baton Rouge, on Sept. 13 by the following panel of judges: Dale Allen, Shell Chemical, Geismar; Doug Ashe, Ashe, Broussard, Weinzettle Architects, Alexandria; Jon Bidnick, Citgo, Lake Charles; Tara Brown, Unit Design, Baton Rouge; Pat Johnson, O. S. Johnson, Natchitoches; Frank Miller, F. Miller & Sons, Lake Charles; Jay Mueschke, Barras Mueschke Architects, Lafayette; and Bill Temple, Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Baton Rouge.

The judges based their decisions on the following criteria:
  • quality of construction or design
  • innovation
  • a project's contribution to the industry
  • a project's ability to overcome unique construction or design challenges
  • overall excellence
Winning projects were determined as follows:
  • "Best Construction/Design Project of 2001" - One project determined by the judges, following a discussion, to be the best of all entries
  • Best project in a category: The project with the highest score in categories with three or more nominations
  • Award of Excellence - All projects scoring 4.0 and above (out of 5)
  • Award of Merit - All projects scoring 3.5 to 4.0 (out of 5)
