Our Lady of
Wisdom Skilled Nursing Facility
Architect: Blitch Knevel Architects, New Orleans
Location: New Orleans
Cost: $26 million
Project Design Team: Ronald B. Blitch & Ken Knevel
General
Contractor: The Robins and Morton Group, Nashville, Tenn.
This skilled nursing facility was developed by 16 Catholic
religious orders in a true spirit of collaboration to serve
the needs of their elderly members. The ownership of the facility
and the model being used for care make Our Lady of Wisdom
one of the first of its kind in the United States.
The project was recently awarded a Citation for Design Excellence
by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American
Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA).
Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center consists of three,
46-bed neighborhoods, divided into 18 clusters of seven to
nine beds each. Each neighborhood is served by nurse aide
stations and separate dining and lounge areas within the clusters.
A central courtyard is the focus of a 150-seat chapel, a clinic
for program and rehabilitation services, an administrative
area, a mental health wing, a multi-purpose room, and an enclosed
greenhouse.
This 138-bed facility enables religious communities to face
together the challenge of providing state-of-the-art care
for their elderly. A future Dementia Day Care program will
also be provided in an attached structure.
The facility is 115,000 sq. ft. in area, in a two-story structure
reminiscent of the Italian Romanesque style. The eight-acre
site is located on the campus of Our Lady of Holy Cross College
in New Orleans.
