List spotlights major players in five-state area
The south central region's largest contractors had about $11.1 billion in regional revenue and more than $30.2 billion in total revenue, according to data compiled by South Central Construction magazine.

A wide array of new technologies are being used in water and wastewater treatment plant upgrades across the south central region to make the water cleaner and the facilities' aroma rosier.

Growing demand

Lafayette treatment plant expanded by more than 50 percent
An upgrade at the Ambassador Caffery Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lafayette will increase the facility's capacity by more than 50 percent from 6 million gal. per day to 9.25 mgd to accommodate increased demand from a growing population.

Necessary upgrades

Projects at two Shreveport plants will boost capacity, improve efficiency
Upgrade projects have been underway since May 2005 at two Shreveport wastewater treatment facilities. The projects, under a single $22.3 million contract, will be completed by May.

Big trip

Bayou Lafourche lock to be floated 80 mi. for installation
When the water elevation rises in Bayou Lafourche in south Louisiana, the South Lafourche Levee District is forced to shut the floodgates. That prevents flooding, but it also wreaks havoc on fishing, boating and barge transportation.
